Does the name on my booking need to match my passport exactly?

Answered by Narendra

Yes, the name on your booking should match the name in your passport as closely as possible. Airlines check the name on your ticket against your passport at check in, and if the two do not match they can refuse to let you board. Hotels and transfer drivers are usually more relaxed, but for flights it is worth getting right from the start.

When you book, type your first name and surname the way they appear in your passport, not the short name friends use for you. If your passport shows a middle name, you can usually leave it out or include it, as long as your first name and surname are correct. Titles like Mr, Mrs or Ms are not part of your legal name and do not normally cause a problem. If your surname has changed after marriage, use the name printed in the passport you will actually travel with.

If you spot a spelling mistake after booking, tell us as soon as you notice it. Some airlines will fix a small error, such as one or two wrong letters, free of charge if it is reported soon after booking. Others treat any change as a name correction and apply a charge, and a few do not allow corrections at all, which means the ticket has to be cancelled and bought again. This depends entirely on the airline and the type of fare you bought, so we cannot promise an outcome before we ask them.

For your own planning, check your passport and your confirmation side by side on the day you book, while any fix is likely to be simplest. If you are travelling with family, check every traveller on the booking, not just your own name.
